Created by Japan’s Mori Corporation, the 101-floor Shanghai World Financial Center will – for a brief period – be the tallest flat-roofed building in the world when it opens in late July.
Located in the Pudong financial district, it dominates the Shanghai skyline and rises high above the adjacent 88-floor, 425-metre Jinmao Tower, which was formerly mainland China’s tallest building.

Aiming to create a “Vertical Complex City,” it will feature 2.4 million square feet of commercial office space spanning 70 floors, an underground retail mall, three-level conference centre, numerous F&B outlets and a Park Hyatt Hotel. |

The building boasts 91 elevators to service the 101 above-ground
floors and three below-ground levels. There are 2,271 underground
pilings supporting the building's foundations. |

When it opens on 31 July, the Park Hyatt – located between the
79th-93rd floors – will lay claim to the title of "the world's highest
hotel, spa, restaurant and bar." |

The Park Hyatt’s 174 rooms are designed by Tony Chi, and will be located between the 79th and 84th floors. The lobby sits on the 87th floor, and there will be an 85th floor spa, fitness centre and pool, and bars and restaurants from the 91st-93rd floors. |

The 100th floor (standing at 472m) features a 55-metre ‘glass corridor’ sightseeing platform – with walls, ceiling and flooring all made of transparent glass. |

To counteract strong wind conditions, two mass dampers were installed on the 90th floor, whose sensors detect any swaying of the building. They are connected to a computer-controlled, 150-tonne counterweight suspended by wire rope that will instantly control any building movement. |

The building features an open rectangular space at the top, which has led to the nickname of “the bottle-opener.” This opening was originally designed to be circular to replicate a Chinese moongate, but authorities were concerned that it would look too much like the Japanese national flag flying over Shanghai. |
