Scribes of the Orient provides China-based business, travel and lifestyle features, marcoms content and specialist photography. We work for publishers, marketing and communications companies and event planning specialists.
The company was established in Hong Kong in May 2007, though our team has been resident in China for many years. Comprised of three founding members, we also work with a range of specialist China-based writers, photographers and communications professionals. |

From a remote Salvadoran prison to the high-altitude Qinghai-Tibet railway and the Bird’s Nest Stadium in Beijing, Oxford-born Gary Bowerman travels to any destination to find a good story. Since cutting his publishing teeth on legal and tax texts in Oxford and London, Gary has edited several business and travel magazines – including ASTA Network, Shanghai Business Review and BizChina-Update.com – and interviewed global business leaders, government officials, sports stars and celebrities on four continents.
Gary has recently contributed China and Asia-based features to CNBC Europe, Global Finance, South China Morning Post, Business Traveler, CNN Traveller, New York Times, Concierge.com, Conde Nast Traveler, Departures, Forbes Traveler, NineMSN and Nota Bene. Sydney-born Amy Fabris-Shi has enjoyed her fair share of unique travel experiences. She started off touring the world as a classical ballet dancer. After settling in Shanghai six years ago, she traded pointe shoes for private valets, becoming Editor-in-Chief of leisure travel magazine Asia and Away and Lifestyle Editor of that's Shanghai.
Specialising in design, fashion, travel, wellbeing, theatre and dining throughout Asia, Amy has recently written for New York Times - T Magazine, Food & Wine, Departures, Prestige, Centurion, Platinum, Forbes Traveler, DestinAsian, Gulf Life, The Australian, Smart Travel Asia and Time Out. She is also Resident Shanghai Editor of Beijing-based design and lifestyle magazine Urbane, Editor for the Shanghai and Beijing Highlights series of bespoke culture and shopping guides, and a consultant for China-based public relations firms. |

Having previously lived in Austria and Australia, Italian photographer Daniele Mattioli has been Shanghai-based for three years. A specialist in editorial, corporate and portrait photography, he is regularly commissioned to travel around Asia by leading international publications and companies.
Daniele’s work has been published by Time Asia, New York Times, Vanity Fair Germany, Focus Magazine, Der Spiegel, Merian, D Repubblica, Corriere Magazine, Geo Japan, Daily Telegraph and El Mundo. His talents are also in-demand by leading international organisations, including Nestle, Stanford University, Lenzing, GTZ and PPG.
